If you’ve ever checked into getting your car detailed you probably know the service can be quite pricey. And you probably thought to yourself, “What on earth could they possible do that would cost that much?” followed by “I can probably just do it myself”. And, while it’s true you can take your car down to the local car wash and maybe even get a free vacuum, cheap isn’t always a good thing (and can actually cost you more in the long run). The same advice applies to that discount detail service you found on Craigslist. $50 for a full interior/exterior detail, that’s amazing. No, no it’s not. And yes, I know he says he knows what he’s doing but just trust me on this one. If he did, he’d be charging more. “Good detailing is all about the application; An Amazing detailer can get decent results with decent products, but an awful detailer can’t get great results even with great products.”
This may seem obvious but I have to say it, they’re call detailers for a reason. It’s their job to pay attention to every detail from the products they use to cleaning every nook and cranny of your car. Have you ever tried to vacuum that little space between the center console and your seat? Yeah me too. Apparently there is a magical little tool that can fit down there and I’ve never seen one at my local car wash/vacuum. And while they sell wax and the local auto parts store, I don’t have time for all that nor do I have all the fancy tools a professional detailer has. Did you know there is a difference between polishing and waxing? Of course you didn’t…a detail only a professional would know (note: if you did know that I’m going to go ahead and assume this article is not for you, you should stop wasting time reading it and get back to waxing your car). Using the wrong materials or the wrong products can leave scratches in that beautiful paint job, and we can’t have that.
Listen, you love your car or you wouldn’t even be considering detailing it. The last thing you want to do is take it down cheap Joe Schmoe who will slop some tire shine on your dash and wax it with a dirty rag. Before you know it you just spent $50 dollars for a scratched up car that smells like the air freshener from a gas station bathroom. This is just one of those things that can really only be done right by a professional. Splurge once a year (or more if you can manage it) and take care of your car. The peace of mind you get from knowing it’s done right is invaluable. And taking care of your car properly adds to the resale value so really, you’ll get your moneys worth in the long run.
